Maple, Red

The Red Maple, is a striking broadleaved deciduous tree, that can grow to a height of 20m, and may live for 200 years, although 80 to 100 years may be more typical.

This tree was planted in memory of Mr Hungerford Rowley, a long and respected resident of Braintree.

Red Maple leave are green on the top and a light greenish white on the underside, and turn a brilliant red in autumn.

Small, hanging clusters of bright red flowers appear in spring before the leaves. Two Red Maple trees may look different from each other during the flowering period. Red Maple trees can produce all male flowers, all female flowers, or some of both.

Red maple fruits, called samaras, have an enclosed seed at one end and a thin, dry, winglike projection at the other. Many people refer to them as helicopters because the “wing” makes them spin when they fall from the tree.

The Maple leaf is the official symbol of Canada, and Canadian Maple Syrup production is largely dependent on the Red Maple, together with the Sugar Maple and the Black Maple.
